Expert advice from Canterbury Anglers Club members
Dry fly fishing in Canterbury's clear rivers is world-class. Early morning and evening rises are your best opportunity. Match the hatch by observing what insects are on the water before selecting your fly.
Trout hold in particular spots in the river – behind rocks, in current seams, and in pools below riffles. Look for the feeding lanes where food is concentrated.
When fish aren't rising, they're likely feeding sub-surface. Indicator nymphing or high-stick nymphing can be extremely effective on Canterbury's stony rivers.
When targeting salmon in the braided rivers, bright coloured lures and spinners work well in discoloured water. Fish the deeper pools, especially in autumn when fish stack up.
At Lake Clearwater, trolling is popular for rainbow trout. Near dusk, fish cruise the shallows. A slow-stripped wet fly along the margins can produce excellent results.
Canterbury's fishing season typically runs from October to April. Winter fishing in streams is generally prohibited. Always check current Fish & Game regulations before heading out.
